As soon as you start talking about mystique, you have none. - Neil Young _____ In a parking lot somewhere in Texas, I popped the ash tray out of its socket. The sun was at the horizon and I was the only one up. This day was going to be a long one and I wanted to make sure we could leave on time. Now though, there were so many cigarette butts in the ashtray that it felt heavier than I thought it would. Even though I’d done this plenty of times before, I looked down at the heft in my hands and stared at the micro tornados of ash rising up out of there on unseen thermals, thin as twisted hair.
I liked this one even better than the Philly one although I kind of figured that the best at that time. Like going along for the ride sans the cig smoke and phlegm. A great read! Honestly. Your ability to braid together actual descriptive scenerios, analogies and your impressions/ insights is what makes you shine I think. 20 years ago i wandered into Jacks Music in Red Bank NIJ and walked out with a Marah CD Thought it a great find, and even better live.z I still have that CD.
I felt that yall were the best bar band ever.
Never realized how painfully exhausting being famous must have been, and yet when it comes down to value, well worth the creation of rich memories and all priceless and beautiful things that tend to rise from the ashes. The music is classic, set in motion from who knows when and like riding a bike uphill but coasting along forever gaining momentum, even in the doldrums perhaps…. it was what it is? Idk.
PS.i recommend you and Arle see ‘Unsung Hero’ playing now in local theaters. True story. :>)
Music math...how early do I have to leave DC to get to the Khyber in time to make sure no one gets there before I do? Must take into account bridge traffic, parking in Old City, and other road fuckery. Must then make depart time earlier than necessary to account for unplanned pee breaks... It all adds up somehow.
Great stuff. It put a big smile on my face with how evocative it was of a time and place. Another valuable lifting of the veil on what the life was actually like. It also reminded me of one of my favorite details you once wrote about related to being on an interminable tour- how you felt like you were starting to get “knee fat”! Very grateful to have been one of the people in the shadows.
We are the anxious hungover ancestors of immigrants sitting in silence as we blast off to space.
LOVE THAT.
Fantastic. Thanks for this.
I'm sure glad you took that ride.
