" They come off as entitled brats whose lives have grown, like a tree around power lines, interwoven with something that began as the purest qualities in the world, a real rock-n-roll spirit shared with others, and morphed into one of the most horrific qualities ever: self-righteous super fandom."
Never have I read a more accurate description of Bruce fans and of Bruce himself.
Beginning with the purest qualities and then becoming "Bruce". Like Bono became "Bono"
The Clash saw it happening and quit while they were ahead.
Wow reading this was a great trip down memory lane as I was there at that Bruce show also, I guess technically my first Marah show, go figure, amazing!
Beautiful story. Magical night. I, too, suffer/live with that “outsider” syndrome. Not in some cool, romantic, “I’m so misunderstood” way, but in that I feel like I’ve never really been invited inside “the club”. Even amongst my musical “friends”. Maybe I was never a good enough player/singer. I dunno, maybe I’m just being whiny. In theater I’ve achieved more recognition and therefore acceptance and while it still matters to me—f*ck knows why—it doesn’t matter quite as much at my slightly advanced age.
Regarding the subscription, I didn’t to pay for a year and then get a year for free. I want to pay for your work. If I can pay for a year and NOT get the second year free (sounds weird, I know), I’d happily do that. I’m guessing the windfall would be helpful this time of year in particular. Let me know if we can work that out.
I was there too! I still have the candy cane that Evan hurled at me <g>. It was shortly after Bruce popped his (live) Marah cherry at The Stone Pony.
